Urology is a specialty that deals with ailments of the male and female urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra)Urology is a surgical metier. Besides surgery, a urologist is a doctor with understanding of internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology and other parts of health care.

This is because a urologist confronts a wide range of clinical problems. It also deals with the male reproductive organs (penis, testes, scrotum, prostate, etc.)

Kidney Stone

  • Severe, sudden pain from the loin to the groin
  • Feeling sick and possibly vomiting
  • Bloody or cloudy urine
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • If a stone is less than 4mm (or 0.2ins), it is considered to be small enough to be passed out of the body via urine without any intervention. You may be given medication to help with the pain and possibly anti-emetics, if you have strong feelings of nausea. Although many people manage well with this approach, others need more urgent, hospital treatment for stones. This may be the case if:
  • There is a sudden increase in severity of pain
  • You are being repeatedly sick and unable to keep down medication
  • Your symptoms do not improve after taking medication
  • If you develop a fever

Male stress incontinence

This can develop too. The reason why stress incontinence occurs is that your bladder and urethra are not able to fulfil their function properly and hold urine, particularly when under pressure, such as when you cough or sneeze.

This can happen if:

  • Your pelvic floor muscles are weak or damaged.
  • Your urethral sphincter (the ring of muscle that keeps the urethra closed) is damaged.

Female Stress Incontinence

Women aged over the age of 40 are the most likely to be affected by stress incontinence, although the condition affects men also and can develop at an earlier age.

However, there are many risk factors like Pregnancy, Childbirth, Smoking, Menopause, Excessive weight, Hysterectomy for female stress incontinence which apply to women once they approach the age of 40 and above.

Prostate conditions

We have an enviable team of leading urologists who are experts in diagnosing and treating the following prostate conditions.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate is a very common condition in men. Unlike other organs in the body, the prostate gland continues to grow during every man’s lifespan. The prostate grows gradually after the age of about 50 and by the age of 70, approximately 8 out of 10 men have an enlarged prostate.

Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer. For many, there are no symptoms of prostate cancer. In recent years, there have been important advances in assessments for prostate cancer and at Pace Hospitals, our focus is upon a personalised understanding of your individual prostate cancer risk.

Prostatitis literally means “inflammation of the prostate” – just as tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils and appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix.

If you have any of these consult our team of urologists.

Overactive Bladder (for both men and women)

Urge Incontinence and Overactive Bladder (for both men and women)

Urge incontinence is a common condition which causes the bladder to contract suddenly in an uncontrolled way. Contractions often occur when the bladder is not full.

Symptoms of the overactive bladder...

  • You may experience an overwhelming desire to pass urine.
  • You need to go to the toilet much more frequently than other people.
  • You may wake up at night wanting to go the toilet, two or three times every night.
  • There may be some leaking of urine before you are able to get to the toilet in time.

When to seek medical advice

Symptoms can develop gradually and people adjust their lives around those symptoms. However, we would urge you to seek medical advice if:

  • You are experiencing pain in your bladder or abdomen area.
  • If you are getting up to go to the toilet more than once a night.
  • If your symptoms are affecting your lifestyle and well being.

The urinary system includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. These organs help the body eliminate waste products and fluids from the body in the form of urine. Cancer that begins in any of these organs is known as urinary system cancer.

Kidney cancer is the most common type of urinary system cancer. It can begin in the lining of the kidney or in the cells that form the kidney's tubules. Symptoms of kidney cancer can include abdominal pain, blood in the urine, and a lump in the abdomen. Treatments for kidney cancer include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of urinary system cancer. It typically affects older men and begins in the prostate gland, a small walnut-shaped gland located just below the bladder. Symptoms of prostate cancer can include difficulty starting or stopping the flow of urine, weak or interrupted flow of urine, or blood in the urine. Treatment for prostate cancer typically includes surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy.

Urinary bladder cancer is a type of urinary system cancer that affects the urinary bladder, which is the organ that stores urine. Symptoms of bladder cancer can include blood in the urine, pain or burning during urination, and frequent urination. Treatment for bladder cancer can include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Testicular cancer is a type of urinary system cancer that affects the testicles, which are the two male reproductive glands located in the scrotum. Symptoms of testicular cancer can include a lump or swelling in the testicles, pain or discomfort in the testicles, and a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum. Treatment for testicular cancer typically includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

Penile cancer is a rare type of urinary system cancer that affects the penis, which is the male reproductive organ. Symptoms of penile cancer can include a lump or sore on the penis, discharge from the penis, or bleeding from the penis. Treatment for penile cancer typically includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
